How will I know if I will need to be admitted to the Diamond Headache Inpatient Unit?

When you are seen on a new patient basis, your physician will perform an in-depth headache history. Based on his/her findings, you will be given the recommendation moving forward on what the doctor feels is the best course of treatment, whether to treat on an outpatient vs an inpatient basis. It is impossible for us to know what your treatment plan will be until you are seen. If you are recommended for the inpatient stay, there is an option to be admitted within the same day. However, we also understand that in some cases, you may need to delay hospitalization until your schedule will permit the absence. We are willing to work with you in deciding the best treatment option for you!

If I am being admitted to the Diamond Headache Inpatient Unit, what can I expect?

The inpatient treatment program is a multi-dimensional approach to treatment. This will involve individualized drug therapy, psychology, physical therapy, biofeedback & alternative therapies such as massage and acupuncture. The same doctor who treated you in our clinic will direct your treatments at the hospital. You will see other doctors and caregivers for some of the specialties mentioned above, but a Diamond Headache Clinic physician will be there every day to make sure your treatments are going well. Upon admission, there will be a welcome packet in your room. Included in the packet will be the schedule for your stay!

What do I pack for an inpatient stay?

You will be permitted to wear your own clothing throughout the duration of your stay! We recommend packing for a 7-10 day stay. There is a washer and dryer on the unit if you need to utilize laundry services. We also recommend travelling with your own toiletries. The schedule will keep you pretty busy during the day but there is downtime at night. You are permitted to have your phone, laptop, tablet, book, etc. to use during down time hours.

Do I need to bring my home medications with me for hospitalization?

No. The vast majority of medications will be provided to you from hospital supply. If there is a supplement or medication that you take for other medical purposes besides headache, notify your doctor so they can be added to your treatment plan. If you do bring your home medications, they will be taken from you upon admission and stored until discharge. In the event that the hospital does not have something that you take, they will allow you to take medication from your personal collection, but the need for this does not happen often.
